Submissions to Critical Asian Studies

Critical Asian Studies covers the Asia and Pacific regions, with an emphasis on exposing injustices and exploring processes of social change. Dissident and controversial views and the perspectives of indigenous Asians are particularly welcome. Before submitting manuscripts, please review all style and formatting information below. For questions about submissions, contact Editor Dr. Robert Shepherd at editor.criticalasianstudies@gmail.com.

Authors interested in submitting their manuscript to Critical Asian Studies can do so through the Taylor & Francis Online submission platform.

Types of Material We Publish

Critical Asian Studies publishes research and analysis, commentaries, interviews, photo essays, book reviews, field notes, and translations of literary or other works that are of social, political, economic, ideological, or historical significance. Our goal is make the material we publish in Critical Asian Studies accessible and of value to general readers as well as to specialists. For this reason we ask authors to strive for clarity and economy in writing.

  • Original Research Articles

Critical Asian Studies publishes articles from most any discipline and on any question or topic that reflects our mission statement. Articles should be between 7,000 and 15,000 words (including notes and references). For questions about original research article submissions, contact Editor Dr. Robert Shepherd at editor.criticalasianstudies@gmail.com.

  • Reviews and Review Essays

Review essays are typically between 5,000 and 10,000 words. We prefer review essays that compare two or more books and discuss problems of approach or analysis. Reviews should be about books that were published within the last three years. A review essay might focus on a subject, with occasional references to the two books under review (in the manner of the New York Times Review of Books), or be an evaluation of the books proper, with occasional comments about the general subject. Please contact Editor Dr. Robert Shepherd at editor.criticalasianstudies@gmail.com and explain which books you would like to review before submitting a complete manuscript.

  • Notes from the Field

These short pieces, typically between 1,500 and 5,000 words, describe an aspect of the author’s ongoing research project and are published in the online Commentary Board. This typically will be a small part of a much larger project, and describe contingent findings, emerging questions, or field experiences. For further inquiries or to publish a Note from the Field, please contact Digital Media Editor Dr. Tristan R. Grunow at digital.criticalasianstudies@gmail.com or complete the content submission form found at the bottom of the Commentary Board page.

  • Commentaries

A commentary is a learned opinion piece published on the online Commentary Board that may or may not be footnoted and evidence-based. The author will offer a clear and concise perspective on a social, cultural, political, or economic issue of the day, one which speaks to larger questions. Commentaries usually are between 1,000 and 1,500 words. For further inquiries or to publish a Commentary, please contact Digital Media Editor Dr. Tristan R. Grunow at digital.criticalasianstudies@gmail.com or complete the content submission form found at the bottom of the Commentary Board page.
